Agent Orange
It's not that we didn't try.
We really did.
It just didn't work out as we'd hope for. They just refused to back down and leave.
For too long have they bred and multipled. For too long have they terrorised our surrounding environs with their filth and scum. It's time we hit back.
First we tried the "carpet bombing" method, using chemical agents to weed out the enemy. It did work. Only on the ones unfortunate enough to be cornered into the well, corners, nooks and crannies of the dark abysses. But there was no one to retrieve the decomposed bodies once they perished, and that in itself would bring a whole lot of other problems. The chemical agents too, would only last this long before the effect wore off. And what about possible resistance and mutations to their effects? No one knows yet. Then there is the issue of the costs of using these chemical agents - the amount of funds channelled into this expensive and drawn out campaign. What about the unseen externalities to the environment and humans alike?
When we ran out of ammunition, we were forced to fall back on the search and destroy missions. We would seek the enemy out and kill them off one by one. But this was easier said than done. We lacked, and are still lacking able-bodied troops to fight. Most were and still are too scared even by the mere sight of the enemy, with suitable weapons few and far between. The enemy, ever nimble and quick, eluded our grasp on many an occasion.
In desperation, we turned back to science and technology, looking for solutions. And today, we have brought the fight right into the hearts (and stomachs) of our enemies. We entice them with poision-laced bait. Once they consume it, they'd not only be infected, but spread the disease back to their homes and to their numerous comrades, especially the newborns and adults. In doing so, we will hit them where it hurts the most. Death by their own kind.
The latest measure is still in its infancy, and its effectiveness remains to to be seen. But this has been our best hope yet, and we are still, keeping our fingers crossed...
